Your opponent was inactive for too long, that should not lead to an automatic loss.

I played a game against a strong opponent who was ahead in the end-game and I was only playing untill the end hoping that the flag might be somewhere in an unguarded position.
At some point the opponent was taking a long time for their move. I guess that they may have lost connection. I decided to wait and surrender just before the end of their time. But while their clock was still ticking and they had more than 2 minutes the game stopped with the message that the opponent was inactive for too long.
I believe that the game should wait untill the full five minutes. And if it is desired that inactivity should end the game, then at least some pop-up window should be shown where a player can choose to decide the outcome (in a similar way that the lichess app does this).

I think having the ability to decide the outcome is definitely a good way to handle these kind of situations.
Lichess and Chess.com are both really nice I use them both daily and they also have tons of features.
The way we handle the inactivity comes from Chess.com.
As of right now we have the inactivity timer pop up based on the amount of moves.
We are however still tweaking these values to get them to a point where it fits players on both sides.

The inactivity happened to me as well (while I was not inactive!). The application shut down unexpectedly and when I reopened the application and logged in again I came back to the game that I was playing. However, after making one move I had no control over the game anymore. Nothing happened and I couldn't make any move whiley timer was ticking.

Would these problems be less common when playing in a browser?

Something is wrong or something is fishy.

I played a top ten player multiple times and the game ends in my opponents INACTIVITY.

There is no change in my score.  AND my record against this opponent remains 0/0/0

IS THIS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK? !

If so, this does not seem trustworthy.

Matches that are cancelled by inactivity are not counted towards the head to head statistics.
So 'winning' a match by your opponent going inactive will not net you a win versus them.

I also regularly notice that I suddenly can no longer move. I suspect I acted too quickly. This often happens when I keep moving a piece in a row. I have the feeling that I will take the step before the official time has started. quickly closing and logging in again results in my move being undone. Then I can continue playing.

But what if they 'become inactive' because they are down Marshal/General etc

They could avoid the loss?

It counts as a win.

It's only on the first move (and second move I think?) where inactivity results in the game becoming null and void.

It's a very poor idea from the developers, as people can exploit this to pick and choose who to play against. People have done this on purpose to avoid playing against me, then surprisingly (!) we managed to get paired again immediately after the first match was declared null.
